"Walk with me," Lorenz ordered Cassidy, still using Latin. He dismissed her father without further consideration. Around them, other Believers had begun to clean up the mess Vincenzia and her companions had made of their headquarters. Lorenz walked without care over the broken glass strewn over the floor. His plans churned as he considered his options.

The sheriffs of this county still patrolled the area, but Lorenz trusted Lukas to spin whatever story they needed to keep the law at bay until the more unusual aspects of his dinner party could be swept away. That was all Lorenz trusted him with. Lukas Tolmach was an Elder and a cell leader and in Lorenz's experience cell leaders were at best thinkers, at worst schemers. Lukas had admitted to both - he had to be or he'd be less than useless.

His daughter on the other hand not only managed to initiate contact with an elf, she had seduced one. That proved she could follow orders, but could also think independently enough to complete her mission. She also had an inkling that he wasn't exactly what he appeared to be. That too could prove useful.

He had already opened the front door and stepped outside when he realized that Cassidy had fallen behind. He watched her as she carefully stepped around piles of refuse, her slippers offering little, if no protection. He held the door wider to let her through.

"Your father is a fool," Lorenz said, not wasting time.

"Others would argue with you," Cassidy replied, pulling the collar of her robe close against the chill wind that swept off the nearby river. "He had hopes of pulling The Believers out of the abyss of centuries old thinking."

Lorenz shook his head. "The Grand Elders will always cling to the idea that we can coax the elves back into our world. That we can make peace with them, learn their secrets through open dialog. They hope to heal the wound torn open by our Great Betrayal. That is what the Grand Elders are supposed to do. They wouldn't be Grand Elders otherwise. Your father isn't the only Believer who grew impatient over the centuries."

Cassidy let go of her collar and shoved her hands into pockets, but Lorenz couldn't tell if she knew he was talking about himself. "What do you see when you look at me?" he asked.

"You look human," Cassidy answered, her eyes squinting a bit in the low light of the lamp overhead. "But you’re not."

He'd guessed right. She had known that he was different, but her father had not. "And what brings you to that conclusion?"

A small smile cracked the cool façade she wore in the house. "I was born into this cell. Lukas raised me for one specific purpose, should that need arise. I know what men smell like, and you don't smell like a man. You don't even smell human. There's an earthiness about you that I can't explain."

Lorenz nodded. "Good enough. Will you tell your father about me?"

"What would you do if I did?" She asked instead of answering.
